about

This was one of those rare occasions where a song that I wrote from a song-prompt actually turned into something I really liked, and then my good friend Tristan McCoppin came and sprinkled some magic on it.

lyrics

She always hides behind a cigarette
She says she's gonna quit, just not quite yet
She's taking in the view
The music's drifting through the kitchen door
She says, I don't think I can do this anymore

Did you see they finally sold that vacant space?
For years nothing but sawdust saw the place
I wonder what it's gonna be?
They even cut down that old tree that was overgrown
And I wish they would have left that tree alone

And the boys ride
Skateboards to the liquor store
Armed with fake IDs that claim they're twenty-four
And there are always those drifters
Drinking from their paper bags
Sweating in the midday sun
And sifting through the midday trash
Until they find what they are looking for

Do you remember when
That old man used to come around?
He'd always walk his dog on this side of town
But ever since she died
He's stayed locked up inside
So sad and grey
Somebody'd better see if he's okay

And the boys ride
Skateboards to the edge of town
To smoke and drink
And wear the sunset like a crown
And they're always just drifting
Talking big, and being loud
Wondering, will they go away to school
And make their parents proud
Or if they're really ever getting out?

She trembles in the quiet winter night
Asks a passing stranger for a light
Looks up at the stars
Heads over to the bar for just one round
It may not look like much
But it's still her town

It may not look like much
But it's still her town
